GROOMING ALOPECIA - DOUBLE COATED BREEDS
Grooming Alopecia is grooming induced hair loss/patchy regrowth on double coated dogs ONLY. **This does not apply for any mix with a continually growing coat that needs to be cut (poodle, Shih-tzu, Maltese, Yorkie, etc) This does not apply to any doodle mixed with a double coated dog.**

When shaving a double coated dog, there is always a risk you will damage the coat permanently. 90% of the time, the coat never grows back the same.

Your dog may show signs of being hot because he has a thick coat but shaving him is not going to solve the being hot problem. Double coated dogs have an undercoat that sheds a few times a year and regrows. If that coat gets stuck and doesn't shed all the way, then you get a very compacted coat and very hot dog over time. The double coat they have protects them and keeps them cooler than you think. A shaved dog can overheat from being too exposed to the heat and not being able to keep the heat off of his body.

Regular baths and desheds are all this type of coat needs to maintain their temperature correctly. Shaving them or taking half of their coat off will result in the outer layer of guard hairs being cut exposing the undercoat. This lets in all the external debris, that would other wise be protected against, get close to the skin and can cause other skin issues. Either sunburn due to not having a protection against the sun anymore, yeast or skin infections due to holding moisture and bacteria in a now soft damaged coat, etc.

Once a double coat is shaved, the hair that grows back is either damaged or the guard hairs will not grow back as fast as the under coat, causing the same issues as above. Usually resulting in having to continually shave for the rest of the dogs life as Matting now becomes a big problem.

** I will not shave a double coated dog for any reason other than skin infections/medical care needed.**

Outline/perimeter trims are the only type of haircut these coats needs.
